National Disaster Response Force - PM Modi greeted the NDRF on its Raising Day.Recently Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has congratulated him on the foundation day of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) Raising Day is observed every year on 19 January. Since the formation of the force in 2006, the personnel have played a vital role in the country's disaster management and community awareness for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR). This year 18th NDRF Raising Day is being celebrated. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said it has been at the forefront of many rescue and relief measures, often under very challenging circumstances. He said that the courage and professionalism of NDRF is very inspiring. He said that disaster management is an important topic for governments and policy makers.

National Disaster Management Act

Following are some important points related to the National Disaster Management Act

1. India witnessed frequent natural disasters from 1990 to 2004. As a result, the Disaster Management Act came into force on 26 December 2005.

2. After this, NDRF was established in the year 2006 under the 'Disaster Management Act, 2005' with 6 battalions.

3. Under this act, the National Disaster Response Force was constituted with the objective of formulating plans, policies and guidelines for disaster.

4. Under this enactment, the 'National Disaster Management Authority' was also formed along with the 'National Disaster Response Force'.

5. Under this act, the "National Disaster Management Authority" is a responsible institution for creating policies, plans and guidelines for disaster management, which ensures timely and effective response to disasters.

6. The National Disaster Management Authority is headed by the Prime Minister of the country.

7. The objective of the organization is to build a safe and disaster resilient India through a holistic, pro-active, technology driven sustainable development strategy, involving all stakeholders.
